What is CERTIS?

CERTIS, short for the Czech Express Real Time Interbank Gross Settlement system, is the primary payment platform in the Czech Republic for processing and settling interbank payments in Czech koruna (CZK). Operated by the Czech National Bank (CNB), CERTIS handles approximately 3.64 million transactions daily, amounting to a total of around 910.3 million transactions in 2023. The total value of these transactions was approximately CZK 329,471 billion, with an average daily value of CZK 1,318 billion.

Although CERTIS is primarily used for domestic payments within the Czech Republic, it can also facilitate international payments to the Czech Republic. This is possible when a payment service provider has a relationship with a Czech bank or a third-party provider that can complete the domestic leg of the transfer.

Background of CERTIS

Established in 1992, CERTIS was introduced as part of the Czech Republic’s efforts to modernise its financial infrastructure following the country’s economic transformation. The system was designed to replace the previous interbank payment mechanisms with a more efficient and reliable platform capable of handling the increasing volume and complexity of financial transactions in a growing market economy.

Over the years, CERTIS has undergone several upgrades and enhancements to meet evolving technological standards and regulatory requirements. The system’s continuous development reflects the CNB’s commitment to ensuring a robust and resilient payment infrastructure that supports economic growth and integrates seamlessly with European and global payment systems.

Key Features of CERTIS

CERTIS is a robust payment system designed to facilitate secure and efficient interbank transactions within the Czech Republic. Below are some of its key features:

  • Real-Time Gross Settlement (RTGS): Transactions are processed and settled individually in real time, ensuring immediate execution if sufficient funds are available.
  • Transaction Irrevocability: Once accepted, transactions cannot be reversed, ensuring payment finality and reliability.
  • Unique Bank Identifier Codes: Each bank is assigned a unique identifier to ensure precise and accurate transaction processing.
  • Queuing System for Insufficient Funds: Transactions are queued and processed once sufficient funds are available, preventing outright rejections.
  • Maximum Transfer Limit: Supports transactions up to 1,000,000 CZK; larger transactions may require alternative methods such as SWIFT or multiple transfers.

In summary, CERTIS is a component of the Czech Republic’s financial system, enabling real-time, secure processing of interbank payments in Czech koruna. With features like transaction irrevocability, precise bank identifiers, and a queuing system for insufficient funds, CERTIS ensures reliability and efficiency. Supporting transactions up to 1,000,000 CZK, it plays a key role in maintaining the stability and trust in the Czech financial market.
